I was sitting in my car outside a coffee shop at 10 PM, using their free Wi-Fi to apply for jobs. My kids couldn't do their homework because we had no internet at home. I thought I had no options. Then I discovered that my EBT card qualified me for a program that gave me internet at no cost — no credit check, no deposit, no monthly bill.

If you're searching for "internet for snap recipients," "ebt wifi," or "apply for wifi," you already know the struggle. Internet is no longer a luxury — it's essential for work, school, healthcare, and staying connected. The good news: free and low-cost internet programs exist for SNAP recipients through the federal Lifeline program and provider-specific low-income plans.

What the Lifeline Program Offers in 2026

The Lifeline program is a federal benefit that has subsidized phone and internet service for low-income households since 1985. If you receive SNAP/food stamps, you automatically qualify — no additional income check required.

Benefit Standard Tribal Lands
Monthly discount Up to $9.25 Up to $34.25
Additional connection assistance Not available Link Up: up to $100 one-time
Qualifying programs SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Section 8, Veterans Pension Tribal Head Start, FDPIR, Tribal TANF, BIA General Assistance

The program has a crucial limitation: only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household — not per person. The FCC defines a household as individuals living together and sharing income and expenses.

How to Get Free Internet With SNAP

Step 1: Apply for Lifeline
If you receive SNAP, you're already eligible. Visit LifelineSupport.org (the National Verifier) and apply. You'll need:

news-details
  • Your SNAP award letter (dated within 12 months) — an EBT card photo alone is not sufficient
  • Proof of identity and address
  • You'll be asked to select SNAP as your qualifying program

Application processing: Online applications approved through automatic database checks are processed in minutes. If manual review is needed, agents typically review submitted documents within minutes during business hours.

Step 2: Choose a Lifeline Provider
Once approved, choose a participating provider in your area. Some of the largest national Lifeline providers include:

Provider Network Notable Details
Assurance Wireless T-Mobile Free phone available
Gen Mobile T-Mobile Free SIM; available in 41 states
SafeLink Wireless AT&T/T-Mobile One of the oldest Lifeline carriers
AirTalk Wireless T-Mobile Free phone promotions including iPhone offers in select states
TruConnect T-Mobile Available in California and other states
TAG Mobile 5G+ network Up to 16GB data on some plans; free international calling to 200+ countries

Note: US Cellular Lifeline discounts ended as of March 31, 2026, as T-Mobile took over operations.

Step 3: Apply for an ISP Low-Income Plan
Some households can stack the Lifeline discount with an already-discounted ISP low-income plan for additional savings. For example, Xfinity Internet Essentials costs $9.95/month, and with the $9.25 Lifeline discount, your net cost can be as low as $0.70/month for 100 Mbps internet.

Provider Plan Cost Eligibility
Xfinity Internet Essentials $14.95/month (75 Mbps) SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, NSLP
Xfinity Internet Essentials Plus $29.95/month (100 Mbps) SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, NSLP
AT&T Access $30/month (100 Mbps) SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, Housing Assistance, TANF
Spectrum Internet Assist $25/month (50 Mbps) SSI, NSLP recipients
Cox Connect2Compete $9.95/month (100 Mbps) SNAP, NSLP families with K-12 students

Prices and availability vary by location; contact providers directly for current offers in your area.

Other options: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offers unlimited data at $35–$50/month with no credit check for prepaid options and a 5-year price guarantee.

What About the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)?

The ACP ended June 1, 2024, when Congress did not renew funding. It has not been reinstated as of 2026. Any website advertising "ACP free tablet" or "ACP enrollment" is either outdated or a scam.

Some states have created replacement programs:

  • California launched a LifeLine Home Broadband Pilot in January 2026 offering up to $30/month off internet
  • New York's Affordable Broadband Act requires ISPs to offer reduced-rate plans for SNAP households
  • Other states may have similar initiatives; check with your state's public utility commission

Free Wi-Fi Options Available Right Now

If you need internet today while waiting for home installation, free Wi-Fi is available at:

  • Public libraries — free internet, computers, and many lend Wi-Fi hotspots you can take home for 1-3 weeks
  • Community centers — workforce development offices and social service agencies often have free internet
  • Xfinity hotspots — create a free account to access over 20 million nationwide hotspots even without being a paying customer
  • Retailers — McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King, Walmart, Target, and most hotels offer free Wi-Fi

How to Keep Your Benefit: Annual Recertification

You must recertify your eligibility every year. USAC will contact you annually. In many cases, automatic verification happens without action. If automatic verification fails, you'll receive instructions to confirm your eligibility manually. If you don't recertify, you'll be de-enrolled.

Other things that can get you de-enrolled:

  • Failing to use your Lifeline service at least once every 30 days
  • Having more than one Lifeline benefit in your household
  • No longer meeting eligibility requirements

You don't need to go without internet. Your EBT card unlocks access to free and low-cost Wi-Fi through Lifeline and provider assistance programs. Start by checking your eligibility at lifelinesupport.org. Your connection is waiting.
